Masa Matsushita

The General Counsel provides legal advice to the President and Executive in all areas of law affecting OIST, including corporate, student, and faculty affairs, ethics and research compliance, trademark licensing, intellectual property and technology transfer, the University’s participation in joint ventures with other universities in Japan and overseas, real estate, employment law and services for the OIST community, and the University’s own policies and procedures. The General Counsel also manages the OIST in-house legal team and directs business with external legal advisors and counsel. Masa joined the OIST Executive in January 2020 reporting to the President. Fluent in Japanese, English and Chinese, he obtained his LL. B. from Chuo University and LL. M. from Harvard Law School. His career spans global practice with an international law firm as well as senior roles in leading companies which include GE, Fast Retailing (UNIQLO), Siemens, KOKUYO, and – most recently – Adastria. He has served on the board of listed companies and their foreign subsidiaries, and gained substantial overseas experience while living and working in the United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan and France.
