The origin of the Japanese pearl oyster

16 Dec 2019

Hypothesis of the origin of the Japanese pearl oysters. During the Last Glacial Maximum (20,00 years ago), Pinctada fucata was absent from the mainland Japan. As the sea water temperature increased and peaked about 6,000 years ago, P. fucata reached mainland Japan. Eventually, genetically distinct northern and southern populations were established.
