MRI Specialist (Animal Resources Section)

The Research Support Division (RSD) contributes to research and education by providing excellent common research facilities and research support services for the researchers and students at OIST. The RSD Animal Resources Section seeks an MRI specialist who will be responsible mainly for management of an 11.7-tesla small animal MRI and support MRI experiment. Additionally, the position is required to assist the management of the Section.

The MRI scanner is a Bruker BioSpec 117/11USR equipped with an 11.7-tesla Ultra Shield super conductive magnet, a cryoprobe for mouse brain, a coil array for mouse heart, and a 4-channel radio frequency system.  The main application for this MRI will be to analyze structural or functional changes in genetically modified mice used in cancer research and neuroscience.  However, given the interdisciplinary nature of research and education at OIST and the variety of collaborative research projects in progress, other MRI applications may be developed.  The MRI specialist should have or will be expected to acquire a wide range of operational skills using MRI.  Additionally, the specialist will be responsible for regular instrument validation, troubleshooting, and development of operational protocols for the MRI.

1) Operation of the 11.7-tesla Bruker BioSpec 117/11USR MRI scanner
2) Orientation and training for MRI users
3) Maintenance and management of the MRI
4) Coordination with internal and external researchers for effective use of the MRI
5) Development of operational protocols for the MRI
6) Holding periodical user meetings
7) Other duties as required in the Section.



1) A minimum of 3 years of experience with MRI imaging of rodents
2) Adequate English skills (TOEIC 780 or higher) to work with international researchers


1) Experience with 7-tesla or higher magnetic field MRI operation
2) Experience with animal experiments and/or animal care
3) Skills in image analysis and/or pulse sequence programming
4) Ph.D. in a related research field
5) Ability to communicate in Japanese

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed.

Working hours: 9:00-17:30 (Discretionary)
