Mechatronics Expert (Technician position) – S2T Unit (Touber Unit)

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding (OIST campus video tour). There are no academic departments, which facilitates multidisciplinary research. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration. English is the official language of the University, and the university research community is fully international, with more than 50 countries represented. OIST is rapidly gaining recognition in the worldwide academic community as a model for excellence in education and research.

Position summary:

The Shocks, Solitons & Turbulence (S2T) Unit is looking for a Mechatronics Expert to develop purpose-built remote sensors to support the unit’s research on solitary waves in biological networks (e.g. trees, plants, fungi, corals), man-made swarms (e.g. connected cars, robots) and oceans (e.g. gravity waves). For example, the Mechatronics Expert will contribute to the development of swarming drones to digitize a forest below the canopy with sub-centimetric accuracy in order to capture the time-space evolution of the forest biomass; the development of table-top apparatuses to study wave properties in slime molds, connected cars, vegetation; low-cost sensor arrays to monitor coastal surface flows. The Mechatronics Expert will actively interact with the team (interns, PhD students, post-docs, software developers), explore creative ways of adding value to the theories developed in the unit research projects and contribute to external communication (e.g. publications, conferences) and outreach activities (e.g. open campus, fairs, exhibits).
