Theory of Macroscopic Quantum Systems in Metrology and Probing Gravity-Quantum Science
Position summary:
The Quantum Machines Unit seeks to develop macroscopic quantum systems- where large objects (micron scale and larger), are brought into the quantum motional regime. To achieve this the Quantum Machines Unit has developed novel magnetic levitation experimental techniques and feedback cooling. We seek to engineer lower motional temperatures and to generate sustained non-classical quantum states of motion though the application of quantum forces. Achiving this will open up a huge range of new avenues of research, exploring in detail how decoherence occurs, how such macroscopic motional quantum states can be used for precision metrology, whether such states can be used to probe various theories of gravity e.g. Schrodinger-Newton, and whether these motional states can probe fundamental issues related to the interaction of gravity and quantum. .
Position:
We are seeking talented researchers to perform theoretical research in the field of the engineering and applications of macroscopic quantum systems. One of the near-term applications of quantum technology is to perform ultra-precise sensing e.g inertial sensing, but also it can be useful to probe the validity of various flavors of low-energy quantum-gravity theories. We seek motivated individuals who are interested to perform novel theoretical research in the engineering (eg. via the superposition of quantum forces), and applications of such macroscopic quantum systems and who can work closely with our experimental efforts.
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University was established in 2011 to contribute to the development of science and technology worldwide and to serve as a hub of innovation in Okinawa. OIST is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan which offers a 5-year PhD program and brings together outstanding researchers from across the country and across disciplines to conduct cutting-edge scientific research.
The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking a beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding. To facilitate multidisciplinary research, there are no academic departments. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration.
English is the official language of the University, and the university research community is fully international, with more than 50 countries represented. OIST is rapidly gaining recognition in the worldwide academic community as a model for excellence in education and research, and our unwavering commitment to scientific and technological innovation is dedicated to generating progress that will fuel Okinawa's economic growth.
