Postdoctoral Position - Stability of Convective Loops (S2T Unit)

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. Position summary:

The Shocks, Solitons & Turbulence (S2T) Unit is looking for a postdoctoral scholar to study the stability of convective loops using mathematical and computational techniques. We want to understand how acoustic wave generation and propagation can be engineered and optimized depending on the heat source/sink strengths and positions, the orientation of the loop (with respect to gravity), and the operating point in the thermodynamic space (phase diagram). This research is part of a larger effort to design eco-friendly energy convertors for water extraction. The work is theoretical in nature, and we are looking for talented applied mathematicians. However, the S2T team also builds simple demonstrators and there is ample scope for the theory to be directly fed into the lab. For this reason, excellent team spirit is required.

Qualifications 

(Required)

  1. PhD in Fluid Mechanics, or related discipline
  2. Solid experience with stability analyses and/or high-performance computing
  3. Proficiency in English

(Preferred)

  1. Experience with compressible flows and thermodynamics
  2. Experience with linear-stability and bifurcation theories
  3. Experience with Python and Fortran languages

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 3 years
