Research Technician/Integrated Open Systems Unit (Kitano Unit)

The position

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. Position Summary

The Integrated Open Systems Unit is seeking to hire a Research Technician. The unit carries out multiple research projects and one of the main research project activities is the research and development of a fully automated laboratory system for multi-omics in collaboration with Corundum Systems Biology (CSB). The position works with joint research teams and external counsels to support the teams in R&D activities in their respective collaborative research projects. This opportunity provides direct international exposure to world-renowned scientists, especially in the field of microbiome, and computational sciences, as well as entrepreneurs and business teams.

Responsibilities
  • Support the team and project manager to develop a full-automated system for multi-omics analysis by FY 2024
  • Development of actual experimental protocols for fully automated process, and implementation on actual equipment.
  • Report R&D progress to the supervisor
  • Support collaborative R&D activities with external parties including universities, institutes, vendors, clinics, and companies
Qualifications
  • BA or above in engineering or life science (biology, medicine, biochemistry, bioinformatics, microbiology, etc.)
  • Full-time residence at OIST
  • 2 years or more of engineering experience, a good baseline of programming and scripting skills, and the ability to learn independently - ideally this experience is gained from universities, academic institutes, or industry
  • Competent in drafting, interpreting, and communicating scientific documentation
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Team player who can operate independently with limited instructions
  • Basic English skills for verbal communication
