Research Technician in the Neurobiology Research Unit

The position

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. Position Summary: 

The NBU is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Biological Research Technician to join a neurobiology team researching the cellular mechanisms of learning. The research focus is on the basal ganglia, and the neuromodulators dopamine and acetylcholine. The laboratory uses transgenic and wild-type rodent models in behavioral experiments, combined with electrophysiology, electrochemisty and multiphoton imaging. Awake, in vivo anesthetized and in vitro brain slice preparations are used. NBU=Neurobiology Research Unit.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate animal care, colony maintenance and mouse genetics.
  • Communicate with the animal section to ensure smooth operation.
  • Conduct surgical procedures on rodents, including stereotaxic survival surgery, viral vector injections, and perfusion.
  • Contribute to maintaining and optimizing the laboratory environment (e.g., chemical and equipment inventory, preparation for inspections).
  • Provide technical assistance to laboratory members, including students, research administrator, and researchers.
  • Work in a responsible manner, maintaining excellent laboratory safety standards and hygiene.
Qualifications
  • Experience and expertise in care and use of experimental animals
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Motivation to learn new knowledge and methods.
  • Willingness to work as a team member in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
  • University degree in a relevant field at Masters or PhD level.
