Research Support Staff for Cephalopod Support

The  Okinawa  Institute  of  Science  and  Technology  Graduate  University  (OIST)  invites applications for the position of Research Support Staff for Cephalopod Support in Animal Resources Section. The Research Support Staff will provide support for all aspects of cephalopod acquisition, breeding and husbandry primarily at the OIST Marine Station and on the OIST main campus as necessary.

Position summary:
The Research Support Staff for Cephalopod Support will be responsible for all aspects of cephalopod acquisition, breeding and husbandry primarily at the OIST Marine Station and also on the OIST main campus as necessary.  The staff will report to the Team leader of the Cephalopod Support Team and the Section leader of the Animal Resources Section and will assist in the development of first-class facilities, animal husbandry and research techniques.

OIST Marine Science Station 656-7 Seragaki-hara, Onna Village Okinawa, 904-0404 Japan

Responsibilities 

  1. Daily operation: Feeding Cephalopods (and other marine species), Observation of Cephalopod’s condition and behavior, Quality Control of Sea water (color, clearness, temperature, dissolved oxygen), Recording in legible handwriting of daily operation including confirmation of number of animals, Cleanup and disinfection of tools and work area, Removal of uneaten food.
  2. Provide support to OIST researchers and students in basic training of handling of Cephalopods, Aseptic surgery, Behavioral experiments, Setting up experimental and holding tanks with associated plumbing, Finding and reporting of any abnormalities with animals or equipment.
  3. Monthly operation: Cleanup of tank substrate, walls and filters
  4. Annual operation: review of animal care and use program, occupational health and safety program, and environmental enrichment program  
  5. Weekend and holidays: Same as daily operation with Feeding Cephalopods (and other marine species), Observation of Cephalopod’s condition and behavior, and recording of daily operation, etc.

Qualifications 

  1. Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in cephalopod research or husbandry
  2. Experience in working in a team
  3. Business level communication skills in English
  4. Good collaborative skills relevant to a multi-user environment
  5. Good communication and interpersonal skills
  6. The ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships

Starting Date 

As early as possible

Term & Working Hours 

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed.

Working hours: 9:00-17:30 (Discretionary)
