Microscopy specialist

The position

The OIST Core Facilities contribute to research and education by providing excellent common research facilities and research support services for the researchers and students at OIST.

The Scientific Imaging Section within the Core Facilities provides support for a wide range of microscopy applications in various fields of research including biological and material sciences.  A number of high-end microscopes are managed and maintained by the Section including among others confocal microscopes, SEM and TEM microscopes.

The Scientific Imaging Section is looking for a motivated individual who can support users and maintain the section equipment.  Ideally supporting users from consultation, to microscope operation and data collection in either the light microscopy or electron microscopy facility.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide consultation on imaging, measurement, and analysis using the equipment available at the Scientific Imaging Section
  2. Support internal and external users on sample preparation, microscope operation, and data analysis.
  3. Setup standard training programs, manuals and protocols for the efficient training and use of the instruments.
  4. Day-to-day maintenance of all assigned equipment including the required supplies and consumables.
  5. Maintain good communications and engage with manufacturers and official distributors regarding the maintenance, development, and troubleshooting issues of the existing equipment.
  6. Support the purchase and the necessary procurement procedures of new equipment based on the needs of researchers, by documenting the specifications of the equipment and by collaborating with the manufacturers and vendors, etc.
  7. Maintain well-documented records of research support activities, equipment maintenance and safety procedures.
  8. Other duties as assigned by the Scientific Imaging Section Leader
Qualifications

(Required) 

  1. A minimum of 5 year’s research and/ or support experience with either high-end light microscopes or electron microscopes 
  2. Ph.D degree in relevant field or equivalent working experience 
  3. Ability to learn new skills, to stay at the cutting edge of technology 
  4. Excellent communication skills in English.  Ability to communicate in Japanese is desirable for discussion with domestic vendor and manufacture 
  5. Ability to work as part of a team 
  6. Strong problem solving skills 
  7. Ability to adapt to local culture and rapidly changing work environment
