Preschool Assistant Director

As part of continued efforts to improve the educational environment for children of employees and students, OIST is seeking to appoint a Full Time Assistant Director for OIST’s Child Development Center Preschool Program.  The Assistant Director will assist the director in the daily operation of the Preschool program for children ages 2 months to 6 years of age.  This includes managing teaching staff and aids and working with the director to facilitate the further development of our preschool program as it grows.

Responsibilities 

1. Management Support (30%)

  • Ensure efficient onboarding and offboarding of staff and implement required trainings and professional development
  • Plan work shifts approve time sheets and supervise staff members in accordance with OIST/ CDC policies and procedures
  • Perform classroom inspections and health and safety checks and provide feedback to teachers
  • Review resumes and conduct first level interview for all new CDC employees
  • Deputize in the absence of Director

2. Operations (45%)

  • Assist the Director to create and implement policies and procedures.
  • Document and communicate information about the law as it applies to preschool policy, education, school curriculum, rules and expectations of local governance
  • Advise teachers on appropriate target outcomes, teaching methods, behavior management and curricula for preschool programs
  • Oversees the budget and master planning of field trips and school events; ensures compliance with CDC and OIST Health and Safety policy and procedures
  • Ensure all administrative procedures are implemented in an efficient and effective manner

3. Communications (15%)

  • Update the Director at regularly scheduled meetings with information regarding the care and safety of children as well as any staff or operational issues
  • Attend and participate in internal and external meetings, and center events, as requested
  • Create and distribute school newsletter in collaboration with teachers and staff
  • Update the website, email distribution lists and required forms as needed

4. Other (10%)

  • Support the collection of necessary data and information for decision making and reporting
  • Assist with other daily duties as needed

Qualifications 

(Required)

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in any field or an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education
  2. Computer literacy
  3. 5 years of experience working in an International Preschool Environment
  4. Strong Japanese and English communication skills
  5. Teaching Certification (from any country) or willingness to pursue teaching licensure
  6. Valid Japanese drivers’ license
  7. Flexibility, intercultural understanding, & persuasive skills

(Preferred)

  1. Degree in Early Childhood Education
  2. Experience working in an international working environment
  3. Experience in the design of curricula for nursery & preschools
  4. Leadership experience in a teaching environment
  5. CPR/ First Aid Certification

Report to 

Child Development Center Director

Starting Date 

As early as possible

Term & Working Hours 

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed.

Working hours: Flextime (core time 10:00-15:00) 7.5 hrs per day (Multiplied by prescribed working days per month)
