The Light-Matter Interactions Unit ( ) in OIST, headed by Prof Síle Nic Chormaic, invites applications for postdoctoral or staff scientist positions in experimental cold atom physics. The successful candidates will need to contribute to one of our strands of research within the Neutral Atoms for Quantum Technologies Group on optical nanofiber integration into laser-cooled ground state and Rydberg atomic systems. Only candidates with research vision and exemplary publication records will be considered. The successful candidate must have extensive experience in laser cooling, ideally with integration of nanophotonic structures into cold atom systems, demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications in the field. Ability to work as a team member, while assuming day-to-day responsibilities in the laboratory is essential. The following experience is crucial: 

  1. Laser cooling of alkali atoms, possibly incl. multiphoton processes, nano-optics integration;
  2. Ability to plan and execute a research project in the field of cold atoms;
  3. Modeling of experimental setups using packages such as COMSOL and MATLAB;
  4. Assistance with student supervision in the laboratory;
  5. Proven ability to communicate fluently in English and to publish high-impact papers in a related field

  1. Ph.D. in Physics with specialization in cold atom physics and very strong experimental element
  2. Fluency in written and spoken English, with excellent interpersonal skills
  3. An excellent publication record, ability to work independently, and adaptive to new research directions.

Starting Date 

Summer 2018

Term & Working Hours 

Term: Full-time, fixed-term appointment for two years with an extension of one additional year possible upon satisfactory progress.

Working hours: 9:00-17:30 (Discretionary)
