The Chemistry and Chemical Bioengineering Unit (Tanaka Unit) at OIST is seeking Postdoctoral Scholars with experience in organic chemistry. Please see below for specific information about desired candidates.
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University was established in 2011 to contribute to the development of science and technology worldwide and to serve as a hub of innovation in Okinawa. OIST is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan which offers a 5-year PhD program and brings together outstanding researchers from across the country and across disciplines to conduct cutting-edge scientific research.
The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking a beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding. To facilitate multidisciplinary research, there are no academic departments. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration.

Successful candidates will be involved in research on one or more of the projects related to:
- Development of chemical transformation strategies and methods, including the development of organocatalytic asymmetric transformations and the development of small organic molecule catalysts used for asymmetric transformations
- Development of protein chemical conjugation methods including the development of molecules that react with proteins at certain positions
Successful candidates must be able to:
- Develop and execute independent research in synthetic organic chemistry on the projects described above.
- Write/prepare drafts of manuscripts (including Supporting Information) based on the performed research described above.
- Prepare reports, posters, presentations, etc. based on the performed research.
- Collaboratively work as required.
Successful candidates will be expected to:
- Collaboratively develop novel ideas and methods relevant to the projects described above and for funding applications.

- Applicants must have a Ph.D. (or must be a Ph.D. candidate who will obtain a Ph.D. by the start date at OIST) and have a background in organic chemistry
- Applicants must have demonstrated excellence in research relevant to the work on the projects described above.
Expected Annual Salary: 4.6M-5.9M JPY

Full-time, fixed-term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 6-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed by taking into consideration the performance, conduct, and behavior of the Employee and OIST’s financial and other circumstances.

Discretionary Working Hours System:
In the discretionary labor system for specialized work, the employee shall be deemed to have worked 7 hours 30 minutes per day.
