Postdoctoral Scholar, Biological Design Unit (Finet group)
The Biological Design Unit researches across the fields of biology, physics, and engineering to understand the body designs of plants and insects. We are especially interested in biological interfaces, e.g. the cuticle, that evolved many adaptative traits to external biotic and abiotic factors. We study the relation structure-function of these interfaces, combining approaches from cell and developmental biology, evolutionary biology, and ecology with physical functional analyses based on bio-photonics, -thermodynamics, and -mechanics. We create structural variations using biomimetics (microfabrication) or developmental engineering (synthetic biology) and explore their physical functions in differential environmental conditions.
In particular, as a section of the Biological Unit, the group led by Dr. Cédric Finet focuses on biological and physical phenomena that tinkers with chitin-based materials. This research group looks into the functions and physical properties of cuticle and associated structures, how they form during development, how they evolve and adapt to changing environments, and how we can use this wealth amount of information to develop new and sustainable bio-inspired materials. The Finet group is looking for a motivated, capable, and considerate postdoctoral scholar to join our team to together create a unique research program on cuticle and cuticular micro- and nanostructures in insects. This project would be highly interdisciplinary involving mainly material engineering using chitin-based material, but also biology (transcriptomics, proteomics) and physics (biophotonics, thermodynamics). With such investigations, we aim to developed new bio-inspired and sustainable materials.
We call for candidates with keen interests in our vision, with a strong background in any of the fields:
- (bio)material engineering
- insect evo-devo
- insect developmental biology
- biomimetics and/or bioinspiration
- chemical engineering and/or biochemistry
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University was established in 2011 to contribute to the development of science and technology worldwide and to serve as a hub of innovation in Okinawa. OIST is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan which offers a 5-year PhD program and brings together outstanding researchers from across the country and across disciplines to conduct cutting-edge scientific research.
The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking a beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding. To facilitate multidisciplinary research, there are no academic departments. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration.
English is the official language of the University, and the university research community is fully international, with more than 50 countries represented. OIST is rapidly gaining recognition in the worldwide academic community as a model for excellence in education and research, and our unwavering commitment to scientific and technological innovation is dedicated to generating progress that will fuel Okinawa's economic growth.
