Network Engineer

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Division Function/Position summary: 
OIST has a well-developed network infrastructure to support its unique and world-leading research activities. This position is in the Operations team within the Operations and Support section under the IT Division and is primarily responsible for the operation and maintenance of the network.
In this Network Engineer role, the Network Engineer performs routine network modification tasks based on various applications from users and responds appropriately to network trouble reports from users. We are looking for a highly motivated network engineer who can work as our team member to achieve the OIST mission, becoming a model for university reform in Japan and a world leader in science and technology. This position supports research activities through a network infrastructure that incorporates the latest technologies.
This position will also be involved in the planning, designing, and constructing the entire campus network, which is still expanding.

Working as part of a section under the Operation and Support Section Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining technical resources related to the network infrastructure, and managing the network environment, system structure, and system installations. 
Key responsibilities and duties include:  

  1. Handle day-to-day tasks operating the network environment, including responding to inquiries and trouble shootings from the end-users for integrity and high reliability.  
  2. Configure, support, and maintain network devices, including racking and cabling.
  3. Collaborate and negotiate with network providers, vendors, and partners (e.g., for contractual matters, incidents)
  4. Troubleshoot and analyze complex issues, including problems that impact campus operations.  
  5. Support the purchasing process for network equipment and services for LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, and other communications systems.
  6. Work proactively as a member of a team, share knowledge, and collaborate with stakeholders under the direction of a manager 



  1. Degree in computer science, information technology, or related field
  2. Understanding basic network services such as DHCP, DNS, NTP, and RADIUS.
  3. Experience in network operations and maintenance and troubleshooting.
  4. Experience with network physical and logical configuration drawings.
  5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  6. Business level Japanese language skills (JLPT N2 or equivalent)
  7. Business level English skills (TOEIC 550/Eiken level 2 or above) 


  1. CCNA, CCNP, Network Specialist, or equivalent or higher certification      
  2. Experience with network technologies such as VLANs, STP, VRF, LACP, and ACLs 
  3. Experience performing physical tasks, including installing network equipment and cabling
  4. Experience configuring network equipment (Cisco Catalyst, Fortinet, Juniper, Arista, and so on)
  5. Experience with Cisco access points and Cisco wireless controllers
  6. Experience with network security technologies such as firewalls and VPNs
  7. Experience with automation tools such as Ansible and monitoring tools such as SolarWinds
  8. ITIL certification holder
  9.  Native-level Japanese language proficiency

Term & Working Hours 

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed.

Working hours: 9:00-17:30 (Discretionary)
