Electronics Research Support Specialist
The OIST Core Facilities play a vital role in facilitating research and education by offering state-of-the-art research facilities and support services to OIST researchers and students. The Engineering Section, one of our eight technical sections, specializes in mechanical engineering, electronics, nanofabrication, and materials characterization.
We are currently seeking a highly motivated Electronics Research Support Specialist to support electronics engineering within the university. The candidates’ principal duties will be to design and build custom circuits and electronic devices as required by OIST researchers. In addition, a major portion of this job will be to diagnose and troubleshoot inoperable electronic devices and scientific instruments. The candidate will also train and assist OIST researchers in the use of the section’s common resources for electronic engineering. Additionally, the position is to assist in the management of electronics support within the section.
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University was established in 2011 to contribute to the development of science and technology worldwide and to serve as a hub of innovation in Okinawa. OIST is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan which offers a 5-year PhD program and brings together outstanding researchers from across the country and across disciplines to conduct cutting-edge scientific research.

- Provide excellent support services related to electronics design and electrical engineering.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot electronic equipment and scientific instrumentation that is inoperable and decide whether it is feasible and cost effective to repair it. If possible, repair the systems resulting in significant cost savings for OIST.
- Train researchers on electronic circuit fabrication, testing and other electronic device fabrication. Create training manuals and materials for researchers.
- Provides expertise in area of RF/electronics for research groups which include circuit design, calibration, and fabrication.
- Maintain equipment and work with vendors on maintenance, development and trouble-shooting.
- Research the purchase and procurement of equipment based on the needs of researchers. Create specifications for the equipment and communicate with manufacturers and vendors, etc.
- Maintains and expands collaborative relationships with other domestic and international institutes
- Other duties as assigned by the Engineering Section Leader
(Required)
- Experience in circuit design and fabrication.
- Experience in troubleshooting, calibrating and testing electronic equipment.
- Experience in embedded circuits and systems
- Proficient communication skills in English. Ability to communicate in Japanese is desirable but not required.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to adapt to local culture and rapidly changing work environment.
(Preferred)
- Master’s degree or higher electrical engineering, or a closely related field.
- Experience in cryogenic and vacuum systems.
- Experience in PCB fabrication and PCB design software
- Experience with FPGA programming
- Proficient in the use of programming languages such as Python, MATLAB and C++
