The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding (OIST campus video tour). There are no academic departments, which facilitates multidisciplinary research. Position summary:

The successful candidate will be working as part of the Service and Support Section as a technical support/Helpdesk to enable researchers, faculty, students and administrative staff across the University to get the most from OIST IT services. Applicants need to be flexible, a quick learner, and have a good general knowledge of IT, specifically of Mac OSX and Apple platform.

Under the manager of Service and Support Section, to provide:

  1. Responses to requests for technical assistance in person, via phone, or electronically
  2. Setup and installation of new computers, printers or other IT hardware
  3. Diagnosis and resolution of a variety of technical hardware and software issues
  4. Support to seminar and workshops as needed; attending to and assisting in AV equipment operation and video conference
  5. Creation of documentation such as a manual



  1. Previous experience in IT or certification/training in information technology or a related field
  2. A good understanding of computer hardware, and operating system installation
  3. Knowledge of Mac OSX
  4. Knowledge of the Windows operating system, and standard applications such as word, excel etc.
  5. Basic understanding of networking concepts; computer networking configuration etc.
  6. Proven ability to create user documentation such as HOWTOs, guides etc.
  7. Business level English and basic level of Japanese
  8. Communication skills, and the proactiveness to discuss and gain consensus using English and Japanese


  1. A degree in information technology or a related field
  2. Experience with automated operating system installation
  3. A good knowledge of the newest business Microsoft products (Office365, inTune, etc.)
  4. 2-3 years experience as IT technical support/Helpdesk

Report to 

Service and Support Section Manager

Starting Date 

As early as possible

Term & Working Hours 

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed.

Working hours: Flextime (core time 10:00-15:00) 7.5 hrs per day (Multiplied by prescribed working days per month)

Compensation & Benefits 


In accordance with the OIST Employee Compensation Regulations based on experiences and qualifications

Annual salary: 3.2 million yen ~ (Job class: Administrative staff II, A2)
