Clinical or Counselling Psychologist

“Ganjuu” is an Okinawan word meaning “Good, well, strong, healthy”. This psychology-led service aims to support the wellbeing of the whole OIST community, which includes graduate students, staffs, and their families. The following services are provided:

  • Psychological assessment and therapy
  • Development and support of initiatives related to wellbeing and community
  • Workshops and training related to wellbeing
  • Services to teams (team building, mediation, etc.)
  • Information, advice and consultation on wellbeing and interpersonal matters

The successful applicant will be joining an established team with a British trained, Consultant Clinical Psychologist & Service Director, a British trained Clinical Psychologist, an American trained, bilingual Counsellor, and an administrator. Managerially and clinically, you will report directly to the Consultant Clinical Psychologist.

OIST is seeking to recruit an experienced licensed / registered Clinical / Counselling Psychologist to join the Ganjuu Wellbeing Service. The post provides real scope and opportunity to help develop the service as the University grows, applying psychological knowledge and understanding to meet the needs of the OIST community. The successful applicant will be expected to provide evidence based psychological interventions for graduate students, staff and their families, who present with a wide range of clinical and / or wellbeing issues; contribute to the development of support networks and provide psychologically informed workshops that support the overall wellbeing of the OIST community; provide advice and consultation on wellbeing and interpersonal matters; participate in service governance procedures to maintain a safe and effective service. There is scope to work at an individual, couple/family, group, and organizational level.



  1. Native level fluency in English.
  2. Experience of working with mental health and wellbeing issues across the lifespan, from children to adults.
  3. Excellent clinical skills, including competence in one or more areas of evidence-based therapy.
  4. Experience in using professional supervision to guide practice.
  5. Skilled in providing consultation and supervision
  6. Experience and skills in developing and delivering training and workshops on a range of relevant wellbeing topics.
  7. Understands and practices in accordance with professional guidelines regarding confidentiality, risk management, supervised practice, ethical practice, outcome monitoring and continuing professional development.
  8. Prepared to work in a flexible way, within a developing service.
  9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, clinically, within the team and to larger audiences.
  10. Comfortable working within a psychological framework (strengths-based approach).
  11. Good team player who is happy to communicate ideas with the team, to innovate and develop the service.
  12. Well organized and good administrative skills.
  13. Doctoral level qualification in Clinical or Counselling Psychology. (Exceptional candidates with a Masters level qualification in another branch of applied psychology or therapeutic practice may be considered).
  14. Licenced and registered to practice independently.


  1. At least 5 years’ post qualification relevant experience (less experienced candidates with relevant pre-qualification professional experience may be considered).
  2. Experience applying psychological knowledge within an organizational setting.
  3. Experience in the application of psychology in different cultural contexts.
  4. Experience of working in a university context
  5. Training in and experience of supervising others.
  6. Skills in the use, interpretation, and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests.
  7. Post qualification experience of working with adults and children and families.
  8. Fluency in other languages.

Term & Working Hours 

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed.

Working hours: 9:00-17:30 (Discretionary)
