Biosafety Staff

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding (OIST campus video tour). There are no academic departments, which facilitates multidisciplinary research. Responsibilities 

  1. Provide consultation on experiments involving recombinant DNA or pathogens, review relevant research protocols, and process internal decision-making procedures
  2. Ensure OIST members handling pathogens take necessary health checks
  3. Create and update biosafety training materials, provide training including hands-on training, and maintain training records
  4. Inspect laboratories where rDNA or pathogen experiment are conducted
  5. Organize OIST Biosafety Committee and its meetings including travel arrangements, and prepare the meeting materials
  6. Establish and revise biosafety-related rules and manuals
  7. Management of common BSL2(3) facility and organized the user meeting of the facility
  8. Negotiate with relevant authorities and prepare documents to the authorities in terms of biosafety
  9. Other work related to biosafety and occupational health and safety, in particular including advice on import of biological samples

Qualifications 

(Required)

  1. Experience of biosafety management
  2. Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  3. Business level English and business Japanese
  4. PC skill (MS Word, Excel, Power Point and other general PC software)
  5. Ability to understand Japanese laws and regulations accurately
  6. Master degree in biological science or engineering

(Preferred)

  1. Ph. D. in biological science or engineering
  2. Certificate as biosafety expert

Term 

Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3 month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed.

Starting Date 

on or after April 1, 2018

Working Hours 

Flextime (core time 10:00-15:00) 7.5hrs per day (Multiplied by prescribed working days per month)

Compensation 

In accordance with the OIST Employee Compensation Regulations

Annual salary: 4.2 million ~ 6.6 million yen (Job class: Administrative staff III, A3)
