Collaborative Agreement between RIKEN and Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University

OIST and RIKEN signed an agreement to facilitate the exchange of research and contribute to the promotion of academics, science and technology.

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) and RIKEN signed an agreement on August 1, 2021 to facilitate the exchange of research and contribute to the promotion of academics, science and technology.

Outline of the Agreement

(1) Outline and purpose of the Agreement

This agreement is a follow-up from the Basic Agreement on Science and Academic Cooperation, which was signed by OIST and RIKEN on March 31, 2020. The purpose of these agreements is to promote science and technology in Japan and around the world, and to support the development of leading scientists and engineers. This will be achieved through collaboration and cooperation between RIKEN, Japan's flagship comprehensive research institute for basic research in natural science, and OIST, which is known for its international, interdisciplinary, and cutting-edge research and education activities.

(2) Effective term

August 1, 2021 to March 31, 2025.

If the two organizations agree, the term may be further extended for one year.

(3) Contents of the Agreement

 The implementation of a joint graduate school system, the mutual assistance of education and professional development.

(4) Future endeavors

 Under the joint graduate school system, the development of early career scientists will be further enhanced through the collaboration. RIKEN will accept graduate students from OIST for research guidance, and RIKEN researchers will be invited to give lectures at OIST. Dr. Shigehiro Nagataki, Chief Scientist of the Big Bang Laboratory in the RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research (CPR) and Deputy Director of the RIKEN Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences Program (iTHEMS), and Dr. Mohammad Emtiyaz Khan, Team Leader of the Approximate Bayesian Inference Team in the RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project (AIP), have been appointed as collaborating professors under this agreement.
