Deforestation is the removal of trees from previously forested areas in order to use the land or resources for other purposes, including lumber, mining and agriculture. One of the key goals of protected areas is to preserve and conserve forests by preventing deforestation.

OIST researcher, Dr. Payal Shah has recently published a study, where she uses satellite imagery and statistical tools to determine the effectiveness of these protected areas on a country-wide level and to uncover the underlying factors that impact effectiveness.
